What's been happening?
If you have been thinking that things have gone a little quiet with regards to the saving and restoration of the Ancoats Dispensary please rest assured that we are still working very hard in the background to progress this wonderful campaign.
Although we were disappointed to learn that our first round submission for funding in March of this year was unsuccessful, we are excited to announce that we have now re-submitted a more robust application and will receive the result of this in July – so not too long to wait.
In the meantime the Trust have been busy networking with other organisations including some whom you may not have heard of:
Hallé Community Choir
If you would like to join the Hallé Community Choir, which has just started at Hallé St Michael’s in George Leigh Street, you can get yourselves down there and sing your hearts out. The first session is Sunday 18th May between 2pm-4pm. Session 2 is Sunday 25th May, 2pm- 4pm followed by ‘sharing’ for family and friends at 5pm to include tea and cakes. You don’t need to be able to read music and there are no auditions – just sheer enjoyment.
If there are any youngsters out there who love to sing or write their own music (or both) and want to join in and learn how to do it better then there is a group called ‘Brighter Sound’ based at Band on the Wall on Swan Street - they meet every Wednesday evening between 6pm-8pm. If you are aged between 13 and 18 years old then that’s the place for you.
Please let us know if it is a problem for you to get there, as Brighter Sounds wants to encourage young people from North Manchester to join this group but recognize that it might not be easy for you to reach the venue. If we get to know what the problems are that are preventing young people from joining then perhaps we could work together to resolve them. Each month they hold a showcase on a Wednesday and perform to family/friends or anyone who wants to support them. The next showcase will be 28th May at 6pm, and admission is free. Just go and watch and see if it’s for you. The Ancoats Dispensary Trust are friends of both the Halle and the Band on the Wall and we are hoping to work with them in some capacity within the Dispensary.
The Manchester Metropolitan University
Manchester Metropolitan University have won a £46,000 Collaborative Skills Training Award and Ancoats Dispensary Trust are one of the groups who will begin working in September with the University in research to discover how and in what way we could record particular periods of history relating to Ancoats and its close neighbourhoods. This will lead to a public exhibition showcasing the work under the heading of ‘Creating our Future Histories.’
Party In The Park
If you are around on Sunday 27th of July from 12 noon we will be having a stall at ‘Party in the Park’ at Philips Park. Come along and meet us for a chat over a cuppa to find out how you can be part of Ancoats Dispensary Trust, as we are going to need lots of willing hands with various skills (and looking to gain more) should we be successful with our second application.
Please check back to this website for regular updates and visit our Facebook and Twitter pages - we are still out there and we won’t be going anywhere until our beloved Dispensary is returned to its former glory.
