Spacehive appeal and rewards

As of 21st November 2014, we have 100 days to save the derelict Grade II listed Ardwick and Ancoats Dispensary from demolition - to transform it into a fantastic hub for the community and creative industries. We can’t save it without YOU!

The Grade II Ancoats Dispensary landmark has been the heart of Ancoats for 140 years and it is now under threat of demolition.

Ancoats Dispensary is the setting of L.S. Lowry’s only internal painting Ancoats Hospital Outpatients’ Hall. It has played a central role in the social and industrial history of Manchester and made a pioneering contribution to the development of medicine in Great Britain throughout the 19th and 20th centuries including pioneering works in fractures, orthopaedics & surgical techniques.

The local area has seen wholesale clearance for regeneration but is about to burst back into life. The Ancoats Dispensary Trust have held a vigil outside the building for two years. We are determined to return the Dispensary to its original purpose of healing, supporting and empowering the community in creative ways.

What we'll do:

  • Turn this much loved building into a buzzing source of wellbeing in one of Britain's most disadvantaged neighbourhoods
  • Work with outreach and education teams to promote health and wellbeing
  • Develop a programme of heritage and cultural events to bring the history of Ancoats alive
  • Create a wide range of training opportunities and apprenticeships leading to employment
  • Provide workspace for creative and knowledge-based companies
  • Create a fantastic heritage asset and community hub owned and managed by the community for the community.

Why it's a great idea:

The Dispensary is loved by the community and if we don’t save it now its unique architectural, artistic, medical and social history will be lost forever.

It will give local residents the opportunity to empower their community creating life skills and choices.

In December 2013 David Narro Engineers reported: “It might only be a short time before structurally-significant deterioration occurs…beyond economic, practicable and safe repair. The situation is exacerbated by the condition of the external scaffold structure. The Dispensary depends on this structure for its overall support it is critical that the scaffold is fully overhauled now, and maintained properly until such time as the building can be fully refurbished.”

With your help we can save the building from demolition and in Stage 2 we will be able to restore the building and create a wonderfully vibrant creative hub, full of energy for all to enjoy.

How we'll get it done:

We need as many people as possible to get involved. We need your help to save the Dispensary and help realise our vision. The project will bring huge benefits to the Ancoats community and the people of Manchester. Your support will create a wonderful community asset for future generations.

  • We have £315,000 Heritage Lottery Heritage Enterprise Funding to release it we need your help to raise match funding
  • If successful, Stage 2 will see us secure further funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore the building.

You can help by:

  • Pledging funds towards the project
  • Signing up as a member of Ancoats Dispensary Trust
  • Getting involved as a volunteer
  • Putting yourself forwards to become a director.
